Research, Cancer Registry and Education
A cancer registry is imperative if we are to understand cancer in Belize. Currently all the data we use is based on US figures. We need to know the prevalence of the different types of cancer in Belize and also if there are geographic, ethnic and economic differences within our population.
With this information we can more effectively target our anti-cancer education.
We use the media as much as possible to spread awareness about cancer detection and prevention. The yearly walkathon also raises awareness. Our education team addresses groups country wide on the different types of cancer, early detection and prevention. We also hold workshops and seminars for health professionals featuring local and international oncology experts. Members of the Cancer Society have participated in international conferences and workshops. Our scientific committee is working on a set of protocols that would improve the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of medical personnel in Belize.
Emotional and Technical Support
The Belize Cancer Society facilitates support groups for cancer survivors and their families, helping people to come to terms with their illness and the treatments they need. Home visits are also a part of the service offered by the Belize Cancer Society. We also direct people to the available services in Belize and abroad and may include making contact with people in Merida or Guatemala who can help Belizeans through the bureaucracy. Our dream is to have a cancer clinic for Belizeans where local and visiting specialists can administer much of the treatment that is not currently available in Belize. Inspired by the vision of the late Juliet Orosco Soberanis we also see the need for a small hospice for the terminally ill allowing these patients to spend their last days in comfort and dignity
